Part 1 of our “Looking Back” feature: Titanic Memorial Gardens.

These “looking back” features will re-visit not only our companies most prestigious work but will also feature the earlier stages of on-going projects and bespoke jobs from years gone by.

Back in April 2012 Photocast was offered the great honour of creating a lasting cast bronze memorial for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the great ship The Titanic.

The brief was to work with the curator of the Titanic Memorial Gardens to design and manufacture a magnificent memorial bronze to act as the central feature of the gardens in Belfast.

Our in-house design team worked with the full 1,512 long list of names and this was to be the first time that the names of everyone who perished have been recorded on one monument, ‘The Belfast List‘ as it is now known.

Many existing lists documented the First Class, Second Class and Steerage, but did not necessarily include all the crew members, the Guarantee Group, the postal workers and the musicians.

Once the artwork had been produced and signed off we got to work with production, using our unique chemical etching facilities we were able to produce the master patterns for our foundry and from those then produce the 15 stunning cast bronze panels.

The castings were given an aging treatment before working back the top surface to reveal the beautiful bronze and finally given a long-lasting protective coating.

The finished panels were then taken to site by our fitting team and placed into a stunning 12 meter long, 25 tonne granite plinth.

The gardens opened to the public on the 15th of April 2012 – marking the 100th Anniversary of the disaster.
